Konkan-the heaven on earth.

This blog is about pictures and information on parts of Konkan region in Maharashtra. It covers many tourist towns such as  Alibaug, Guhagar, Ganpatipule, Dapoli, Ratnagiri as well as beaches and forts around these towns in the Konkan region. The approach roads to these places and places of interest around these towns are presented in this blog. These places should be best visited during the season October to February, when the weather is pleasant. The famous Alphonso mango of Ratnagiri region however is found in summer season. Fishing and agriculture are the main occupations in these regions. Konkan region lies between Sahyadri mountains on one side and Arabian sea on the other. Konkan region is known for its greenery and a number of rivers flowing through them. Many of the rivers in this region meet Arabian sea and the confluence adds to  beauty of the region. Virgin coastal beaches are places for tourist attraction. The sand of the beaches too differ in color from place to place.Coconut, cashew, betel nut and jack fruit trees are seen in plenty here. Mango orchards are also seen in large numbers. Konkan region is also famous for its temples and hot springs.

It is thought, Lord Parshuram the great warrior of olden times shot an arrow into the sea and asked the Sea  God to concede the land till the point his arrow reached. Sea God accepted his demand and so,the extra piece of land that came into existence was Konkan. The name Konkan means a "piece of corner" in Marathi.





  Marathi and Konkani are the main languages spoken here. The people understand Hindi and English. Hindus, Muslims and Christians stay together in harmony and peace.

The local food consists mostly of varieties of fish curries and rice. Coconut which is available in abundance is used in most of the vegetables and curries. The food is spicy. Sol Kadi made from coconut milk and dried kokum is one of the delicacies here.

The climate here is warm and humid during most parts of  the year. Winters are generally mild and comfortable. Light cotton clothes are to be preferred for wearing.
